  Dear Cold Spring School Community, The Building Bright Futures Event last night at the Montecito Club was a huge success. A special thanks to our Building Bright Futures Committee Co-Chairs, Melissa McCann and Ali Quivey. The well-attended event highlighted the school’s Exemplary Arts Program, unveiled the new Growth Mindset mural and showcased the proposed new STEAM and Art Classroom Building.   Cold Spring School District Achieves an Incredible Feat and Announces 2020-2021 CAASPP Results As schools everywhere experience an influx of students, teachers, and families returning to the normalcy of academic routines, Cold Spring School District is celebrating the academic success the students have achieved during the 2020-2021 academic year, following the results of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). This past spring, 102 Cold Spring students took the CAASPP in grades three through six, resulting in a 95% participation rate (five students opted out). This participation was critical considering the 2019-2020 CAASPP was canceled nationally in the wake of COVID-19 closing schools and interrupting learning patterns.   The opportunity for expanded literacy is always present. Cold Spring School District’s mission to teach childhood literacy as a critical component of an educational curriculum is supported through county efforts to promote early childhood education. Cold Spring School District educators encourage families to read together at home after school and make time for reading during school breaks in order to build literacy skills and promote children’s interest in reading.   Cold Spring School District is excited to introduce new open-air activity spaces around campus for students to enjoy every day. This academic year is full of opportunities, as students will experience new outdoor activities to supplement their learning through transitional kindergarten and beyond. Transitional Kindergarten and kindergarten are an especially wonderful time for children to be introduced to our new outdoor spaces. They grow with healthy learning routines! Cold Spring School District is committed to giving back to the community. Having experienced tragic loss and property damage due to natural disasters in 2018, Cold Spring understands the importance of supporting the community in times of need. Losing both a home and school is a catastrophic event that can severely affect the lives of all members of the community. Schools are more than classrooms; they are community centers where generations grow. Unfortunately, many schools in Northern California school districts were shut down due to fires and evacuations or were without power and closed due to the fear of additional fires. Cold Spring’s vision is to ensure every child gets every opportunity to be successful, and that vision extends beyond our district and throughout California. The hills of Cold Spring School District are alive with the sound of music. Practicing diligently with the guidance of music teacher Sara DiSalvo, our students are embarking on a successful year of visual and performing arts curriculum.  This year, Cold Spring is delighted to have a new recording studio for students to use! This is one of the many new additions to campus. The studio is located inside the music classroom in the auditorium. We have such talented students! This past June 2021, Cold Spring School District 6th graders put on a production of Annie Jr., a student version of the Broadway musical inspired by the Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie. Students put together their ideas to bring Annie Jr. to life with props, costumes, singing, and dancing, and rehearsed diligently. The Music and Drama teachers at Cold Spring provided direction, inspiring students to be creative and make Annie Jr. their own. The students and teachers’ creativity exceeded expectations! Cold Spring’s production of Annie Jr. is unique in its set design. Students rehearsed together at school and inventively produced scenes both onstage and virtually for a new visual experience of live student theater.   Cold Spring School District anticipates back-to-school festivities and excitement and will be an active partner in promoting walking and bicycling to school. Through the implementation of the Safe Routes to School Program, the district aims to improve traffic safety around school areas. “We are excited to continue working with the community to further develop the Safe Routes Program and ensure our students have safe travel accommodations to school each day,” says Amy Alzina, Superintendent, Cold Spring School District. The Safe Routes to School Committee promotes a safer neighborhood for the students and their families to walk and ride bikes to school, and schedules numerous safety programs (bike rodeo, assemblies) for the students.    More than 130 years ago, the Cold Spring Elementary School District was born. It all began with a small plot of ground, to be exact, a portion of Lot 162 of Old Pueblo Land of Santa Barbara. It was set aside for a school on the south side of Sycamore Canyon Road. That is how April 5th, 1889, marked the date when our school district started developing roots, growing steadily to become a trusted partner in our community, and a solid pillar in the education of numerous generations. Cold Spring School began its operations in 1889, but it was not until 1894, five years later, that the district built its first school building. The first school property was deeded to the School District on October 18, 1889, and the second section was deeded on December 4th, 1889. Time flies. During the 2016-2017 school year, second graders at Cold Spring School District worked together to plant a Native Garden. Four years later, 6 th graders had the opportunity to garden one last time before leaving for middle school. Students were able to see the plant growth and know they had contributed to the local ecosystem, while being part of the district, and feel proud of their accomplishments. The Native Garden marked an important passage of time and remains a gift for the current students at Cold Spring School District. Santa Barbara is known for its diverse ecosystem due to its shared coastal and mountainous geography. I said’ Look!” we looked down at a … BIRD! We were very close to the bird but it didn’t fly away? When it tried to fly away it struggled too.It struggled because it’s tail was ruined. We went to the office and they said to leave it alone.So we went back to class.I told my teacher and he said to go to my STEAM Teacher, Dr. Gradias. So when I got there she grabbed a box and some gloves and she walked to the bird. When she got to the bird she picked it  up and called a parent to take it to the rescue center. It wasn’t until I joined the Recess Writers club in first grade, that I realized it was really fun!     I started to attend it more often, and my work grew with my imagination. A little while after, still in first grade, my class started working on a new project; reports on animals! I chose a golden eagle. I learned all about them, wrote pages on them, then turned them into a book! I was so excited to write so many pages and words!     We were still doing Recess Writers in second grade, when I decided to work on writing more at home too. Along with Recess Writers in second grade, we also did something called Writer’s Workshop, it’s where we watched our teacher, or a video, teach strategies, and then we tried it ourselves. What’s special about Luna is that she is not chocolate, black, or yellow like other Labs; her hair is silver. But, there is a cost for having silver hair. All of her hair is falling out, and not growing back. In the winter, she is so cold, and sometimes, she shivers. It is sad to watch. So, Luna’s family went online, looked for a very long time, and found a dog jacket. Since then she has not been cold.        We also know a hamster named Mr. Fluffball who needed lots of supplies and food to take care of him. His owner took very good care of him and he lived a happy life because that is what people do for their pets.
