A New School Year with New Adventures Outdoors

Cold Spring School District is excited to introduce new open-air activity spaces around campus for students to enjoy every day. This academic year is full of opportunities, as students will experience new outdoor activities to supplement their learning through transitional kindergarten and beyond.

Transitional Kindergarten and kindergarten are an especially wonderful time for children to be introduced to our new outdoor spaces. They grow with healthy learning routines! Student enrollment has increased, so Cold Spring is prepared for multiple adventures and activities in the new spaces.

“Many of our Cold Spring community members worked together to assemble the facilities and provided the labor for the new outdoor foundations” says Amy Alzina, Superintendent, Cold Spring School District. “Thank you to our community and Cold Spring staff for working so hard to ensure our students have a safe learning environment for years to come.”

An outdoor patio has been expanded for students to eat lunch outdoors. Not only is it a new space for students to take a break during the day, but the space also promotes Cold Spring’s commitment to keeping students safe. Eating outdoors prevents the potential spread of COVID-19 and potential airborne illnesses. The outdoor patio is a great way for students to get fresh air and sunshine while they take a healthy break from learning during the day.

Another new outdoor space is the garden and edible forest! Cold Spring’s native garden now has a fence, planters, a greenhouse, and leveled ground for students. Participants will have the opportunity to better understand environmental sciences through gardening. The Cold Spring orchard is also looking healthy and ready to thrive. The native garden, greenhouse, and orchard are a yearly community effort and gift to each grade level at Cold Spring. The School is planting roots for a bright future of smart, empathetic students ready to solve whatever comes their way.

“The Cold Spring community has shown its commitment to supporting safe learning environments for the students,” says Yuri Calderon, Chief Business Officer, Cold Spring School District. “These new outdoor facilities will support students throughout their academic journey at Cold Spring, with even more hands-on learning and healthy routines."

It’s a year of new ideas, student achievement, and positivity. Thank you to the Cold Spring community for coming together to provide these outdoor experiences for our students. Our staff, parents, and community members model kindness, empathy, and hard work for our children who in turn put their own hard work into learning.
