Knowledge Finds a Way: Reflecting on the History of Our School Community

More than 130 years ago, the Cold Spring Elementary School District was born. It all began with a small plot of ground, to be exact, a portion of Lot 162 of Old Pueblo Land of Santa Barbara. It was set aside for a school on the south side of Sycamore Canyon Road. That is how April 5th, 1889, marked the date when our school district started developing roots, growing steadily to become a trusted partner in our community, and a solid pillar in the education of numerous generations.

Cold Spring School began its operations in 1889, but it was not until 1894, five years later, that the district built its first school building. The first school property was deeded to the School District on October 18, 1889, and the second section was deeded on December 4th, 1889.

Since that year, Cold Spring School District has provided a space where children can enhance their knowledge. The school supports the unique potential of each individual student and faculty member, and all are valued and nurtured.

The history of the Cold Spring School District has shown the power of community. Since 1889, the district has worked with our neighbors to overcome the geographic challenges of beautiful Santa Barbara, including supporting school community members during severe weather conditions. Now, having overcome the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and being able to provide in-person education with zero coronavirus transmission, Cold Spring remains proof that the district community is committed to offering an education to all students regardless of any critical circumstances. Indeed, knowledge finds a way.

“As we reflect on the history of the Cold Spring School District, I am proud to know our school is unique in its ability to work together to support students in and out of the classroom. Our district cares about the wellbeing of our community members,” says Amy Alzina, Superintendent, Cold Spring School District. “Our faculty passionately educates our students, who are our future. Our staff are examples of the perseverance our school district has had since 1889.”

The mission of the Cold Spring Elementary School District is to provide a quality educational program in a secure, family atmosphere, which fosters a balance of academic achievement, healthy personal development, social and environmental responsibility, and enthusiasm for lifelong learning.

“The existence of our school district since 1889 is truly a testament to the determination of the generations of our school community,” says Yuri Calderon, Chief Business Officer, Cold Spring School District. “We are thankful for the district community that has continued to uplift our members in times of need.”

Cold Spring is proud to look forward to the return of school in the fall to welcome students, faculty, and parents and guardians back to a new year. The district wishes the community a wonderful and safe summer.
