Literacy in Action
The opportunity for expanded literacy is always present. Cold Spring School District’s mission to teach childhood literacy as a critical component of an educational curriculum is supported through county efforts to promote early childhood education. Cold Spring School District educators encourage families to read together at home after school and make time for reading during school breaks in order to build literacy skills and promote children’s interest in reading. Literacy is important at all ages and in every field, and the district is grateful for families’ support of their child’s education at every stage.
The district is proud to provide resources to help students and families expand their extracurricular experience. That is why Cold Spring School District invites the community to attend Santa Barbara County Education Office’s virtual Breakfast with the Authors on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021.
The event will take place via Zoom from 9 AM to 11:30 AM. Participants will hear from all the authors and illustrators as they address everyone in the main session. Students will have the unique opportunity to spend time in breakout sessions with writers and graphic artists to learn more about the creative process. This hands-on approach to literacy and art is meant to advance the district’s mission of educating the “whole child”.
“We highly encourage our students to read at home with their family as a way to build confidence in their literacy,” says Amy Alzina, Superintendent, Cold Spring School District. “It is also beneficial for students to understand that literacy is a uniting experience and occurs across a variety of professional fields, generations, and languages. Hands-on experiences that introduce students to writers, artists, scientists, and more, empower students to achieve their goals, dream big for the future, and see the components of their education in action as a professional career.”
“We are dedicated to supporting Cold Spring students in their academic journey to reach their full potential, and as a district we provide opportunities for students to learn about the opportunities ahead of them in art, music, science and more,” says Yuri Calderon, Chief Business Officer, Cold Spring School District. “Literacy, however, is a fundamental experience that all students will benefit from improvement throughout their lives.”
The Breakfast with the Authors virtual event is suitable for students from kindergarten through high school, parents, and educators. It is free for Santa Barbara County residents and educators and $10 for others. Register by September 30 at s.sbceo.org/breakfast2021. Space is limited to allow for small interactive sessions with the authors and illustrators. Following this virtual gathering, on Saturday, October 23, 2021, there will be an in-person Breakfast with the Authors event at the Santa Barbara County Education Office Auditorium at 4400 Cathedral Oaks Road in Santa Barbara from 10 AM to 1 PM. The in-person program includes a brunch with locally made goods. Students, parents, educators, and community members are invited.
